From Marvel: “He’s literally clawed his way out of hell, but in this savagely super-sized special, Wolverine’s inner diablo is unleashed when he leads THE LAST RIDE OF THE DEVIL’S BRIGADE. And Logan’s WWII era suicide-mission behind enemy lines is only the beginning of his troubles in a collection from today’s hottest talent that takes the long-lived killer to the bayou, the Mojoverse and beyond!”

On sale February 9, 2011.

One truly outstanding tale, two above average and two that really did not need to be told…

“Last Ride of the Devil’s Brigade”
Writer: Rick Spears; Art: Timothy Green
Interesting tale from April 28, 1945. I’m still not a big fan of the the bone claws during World War II, but at least Logan gets to be a hero…

“Legend of Crimson Falls”
Writer: Jimmy Palmiotti; Artist: Rafa Garres
Ugh…

“The Adamantium Diaries
Writer: Sarah Cross; Artist: Joao Lemos
The best and most heartfelt story of the lot dealing with a young, dorky fan of Wolverine..

“Development Hell”
Writer: Mark Simmone; Penciler: Mike Ryan; Inker: Victor Olazaba
Double ugh…

“Last Men Standing”
Writer: Vince Hernadez Artist: Luke Ross
Another World War II tale with bone claws, this time from 1944. And yes, Logan gets to be a hero again…

Wolverine #5.1 Open Thread

Wolverine #5.1 coverWolverine #5.1 (preview)
Writer: Jason Aaron
Art: Jefte Palo

From Marvel: “START READING with this Point One issue! CELEBRATE the most dangerous birthday in the Marvel Universe when Wolverine’s new girlfriend invites X-Men and Avengers alike to a surprise party for everyone’s favorite mutant. Logan’s birthdays has never been his favorite time of the year, but not even he could anticipate just how bad it could get. One thing is for sure—one way or another, blood will be drawn! Thrill to this stunning beginning of a whole new era for Logan…if he can survive the night!”

On sale February 9, 2011.

I think this issue is a prime example of the best and worst of Jason Aaron.

The best is a wonderfully crafted surprise birthday party that Melita throws for Logan.

The worst are the horribly stupid villains that Logan stumbles upon who no doubt will return based on the final pages.

All in all, a very strong issue of Wolverine’s personal side (I could have done without the Rolling Stones, personally) and a very weak issue of Wolverine’s superhero adventures.

Have at it, everyone!

Wolverine WrapUp (02/02): Daken Dark Wolverine

Daken Dark Wolverine #5 coverDaken Dark Wolverine #5 (preview)

Wolverine does not appear, but is referenced during a particularly intriguing sequence between Daken and Tyger Tyger (or Ms. Tyger as she is now known)…

From Marvel: “SOMEONE THEY CAN HATE, PART 3 OF 6: It’s cover-to-cover blood-soaked action as the most extreme Wolverine monthly ever continues! Wolverine has never faced an opponent quite like Contagion, who becomes a much bigger problem if he’s killed! But first, Logan must get past the aptly named Unkillables. In round two, Wolverine slashes his way past – and through – Slaughter, Suicide, Scavenger and Yi Yang, only to discover that their enigmatic leader is expecting him. Contagion has big plans for Logan. Big plans.”

Wow.

This really is the biggest piece of crap I’ve read in a long time.

From Marvel: “The Avengers team up with the incredible RED HULK as the Hood makes a crazy power move to bring the Infinity Gauntlet together once more. Plus: another illustrated chapter of the oral history of the Avengers!”

In stores January 26, 2011.

Wolverine doesn’t get to do much, but at least it’s clear he’s an integral part of the team unlike the other Avengers’ title out this week…

From Marvel: “QUARANTINE: When your very body is betraying you, and you see life leaking out of your friends drop by drop, what would you give up for the cure? Cyclops discovers what the Sublime Corporation wants. Can he afford to pay it? Meanwhile, Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw reminisce over old times VIA THE STRONG LANGUAGE OF PUGILISM. Part 3 (of 5)”

In stores January 26, 2011.

I gotta say that Pixie is really starting to grow on me, which is a good thing because Wolverine only appears in two pages of this issue…

X-Men (2010) #7 coverX-Men #7 (preview)
Writer: Victor Gischler
Pencils: Chris Bachalo
Inks: Tim Townsend

From Marvel: “It’s a new age for the X-Men. Cyclops and company have declared it a time to be heroes. Wherever a citizen is in need, there’s an X-Man on the job. But strange rumors have come to the attention of the X-Men, and Storm and her team are off to New York City to investigate. What do they find in the dank sewers beneath Manhattan? Only New York’s favorite wall-crawler has the answers.”

In stores January 26, 2011.

A very cool exchange between Scott and Logan, and though I love the artwork by Chris Bachalo, what Wolverine is wearing in the sewers is beyond me…

Uncanny X-Force #4 Open Thread

I still haven’t been able to track down a copy of Uncanny X-Force #2 — so I’ve yet to crack this issue (or the last one) open.

Anyone else caught up care to comment?

Wolverine and Jubilee #1 Open Thread

Wolverine and Jubilee #1 coverWolverine and Jubilee #1 (preview)
Writer: Kathryn Immonen
Art: Phil Noto

From Marvel: “STRAIGHT OUT OF THE PAGES OF X-MEN AND RIGHT INTO THE JUGULAR! Jubilee is about as far away from the ideal X-Man as it is possible for a 17-year-old minty fresh vampire to be. While the X-Men try to find a way to give her as normal a life as is inhumanly feasible, her decidedly abnormal vampire cravings will not be denied. Between that and her newfound powers, she’s winning the fights but not the popularity contests among most of the other X-Kids. Most…but not all. And just when Jubilee starts to think that there is no place for her anywhere, a group of vampire women make her an offer she can’t refuse. It seems like the perfect solution…unless Wolverine has anything to say about it!”

On sale January 19, 2011.

While it should perhaps be called ‘Jubilee and Wolverine’ instead of the other way around, I found this to be an extremely well-written issue, dealing quite effectively with the fallout of the vampire infestations of ‘X-Men’.

I don’t necessarily like what was done to Jubilee, but I do like how Kathryn Immonen is handling it, as well as some fun one liners.

“It’s time to do this my way.”

Indeed.

Wolverine (in Hell) #5: Open Thread

Wolverine (2010) #5 coverWolverine #5 (preview)
Writer: Jason Aaron
Pencils: Renato Guedes
Inks: Jose Wilson Magalhaes

From Marvel: “There’s a riot going on down below! As hell explodes around him, Logan confronts the last person in the world he ever thought he’d have to face again. Plus Sabretooth! And Ghost Riders! And demonic action galore! Don’t miss this shocking finale to the sold-out saga of ‘Wolverine Goes to Hell.'”

On sale January 19, 2011.

Hmmmm…

Not sure this finale worked for me.

I mean, I really like Jason Aaron, it’s a very interesting concept, but I somehow ended up feeling let down.

And, to be honest, it’s not the first time with Aaron’s stories. He writes some really compelling stories, but the endings leave me lacking.
